Mathew Merrett

Mathew Merrett is a photographer who's photographic passion is urban decay within abandoned buildings, factories and mines in states of decay and rot.

"In 2005 I formed a photography collective with five other like-minded photographers. We called ourselves DK Photo Group. We started shooting regularly in Ontario, Buffalo, Detroit, Philadelphia, Ohio and anywhere else buildings are left to die. We even ran our own gallery for a few years."

One aspect that i am going to take from Mathew Merrett's photography is the macro style, close up shots to capture the most intricate detail. I believe this will give the viewer an insight into the hidden detail which you may miss when viewing a wide angle building photograph.

I plan on including macro style photography relating to Mathew Merrett possibly within a studio shoot, i want to do this to focus on objects i plan on taking from the abandoned/derelict buildings i plan on photographing. By mirroring Mathew Merrets close up style photography, i believe this composition of using a 50mm macro lens using the composition of rule of thirds with the object being placed within the centre of the scale. By choosing this composition i feel it will balance the view evenly if i have the top of the object and the bottom of the object on the rule of thirds lines.

As you can see from the bottom photograph of Mathew Merret's interior car park shot, it reflects the rule of thirds composition, this can be seen through the far roof structure being on the first line of third and the line featured at the bottom of the shot being in position of the last line of third. This enables a symmetrical style photograph through the two pillars featuring either side, creating a strong, powerful structured photograph.
