Katherine Westerhout
Katherine Westerhout from Oakland, Californina is a photographer who received her B.A. in Art/Photography from San Francisco State University. As a photographer she takes powerful sharp interior photographs of abandoned and industrial buildings.
"What I am so drawn to is the way the light enters these buildings and the way it carries color, from the outside, depending on the time of day.” - Katherine Westerhout
I attempted to recreate the metal archway
which Katherine Westerhout has
photographed, i tried to recreate this at The Abraham Ormerod Medical centre, (Katherine Westerhout) (My re creation)
the only difference is the lighting, whereas
the composition i attempted to keep
the same. I photographed the recreation of the archway in the portrait orientation to ressemble the same orientation used by Katherina Westerhout. The only reason i could not ressemble the lighting due to no natural light being avaiable due all the windows being boarded up.
When i photographed the recreation i used
the camera settings of an ISO of 1600 as it was extremely dark within the building and i wanted to have a high sensitivity to any light available. The only issue with this is that the photograph contains alot of noise due to the high ISO, this doesnt effect the detail from the photograph, but it is a slight distraction when viewing the photograph. I then used an aperture of f/2.8 with a shutter speed of 1/60 - 1/100 as it allowed the camera to be exposed to the avaibable light for a longer period of time in comparison with a shutter speed such as 1/200 for example.
To conclude, i feel Katherine Westerhout is one of the main photographers that has influenced my topic and work heavily during this module. I feel this as i adopted her composition and photographic technique on many of my shoots, and i feel i learnt alot from researching into her style of photography and what she wants to achieve from her photographs, which is to create an eary, dark feeling which reflects clearly the feelings she felt when photographying them, and this is the personal approach i wanted to deliever to the viewer of my photographs.
